Traci Chee invites readers into an immersive and spell-binding story in which the world is illiterate, but one girl holds to key to unraveling a generations-old secret.

Sefia is left all alone. Her aunt Nin is captured and taken by the very people who brutally murdered Sefia’s father, she knows that she is carrying the very thing they are after – a pile of pages bound together – a book!

the-reader-edit

A story, within a story, within a story. The Reader is about books, but most importantly, the power words have on a reader and the people around them. Chee emphasizes how empowering words can be and also how dangerous.

The plot is complex and the pacing is slow, but it doesn’t hinder the readability of the narrative. I’m glad it wasn’t rushed because the multiple story lines interspersed would have felt bland and pointless.

You’re in it for the details and The Reader delivers. The imagery and setting is beautiful and new. We’re introduced to pirates and assassins and have characters we want to see succeed. There’s also this slow-burn-esque romance and I appreciated that so much.

Prepare yourself for a richly-detailed and immersive fairy-tale like fantasy.

    • It’s so good! The pacing is slow, but the world-building is superb. I haven’t seen a physical copy in person yet, but I just know that it’s going to be so pretty and so filled with little details. The egalley I received, to be honest, I don’t think gave it justice. It’s just so pretty! I hope you like it 😀
