Week 2 & Going Strong //#readthemargin Update

Happy Tuesday! This month I’m taking part in a month long reading challenge called #readthemargin. Created by Manda (ladybookmad). It’s a month long endeavor to read literature created by marginalized authors.

The rundown: reading challenge takes place between Dec 1 – Jan 1, 2017. Read only marginalized authors (which include: women, POC, religious minorities, people with disabilities, Queer/LGBTQIA community).

We’re entering week two and I’ve done quite a lot of reading, but there’s still more I can get through!

Currently Reading: Under the Painted Sky by Stacey Lee

Books Read: 5

  • Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai
  • The Stonekeeper (Amulet #1) by Kazu Kibuishi
  • How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay by Julia Alvarez
  • The Princess Saves Herself in this One by Amanda Lovelace
  • End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days #3) by Susan Ee

I really enjoyed How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay. I’m a tia, so it was fun to read about a kid’s experience with their tia living with them. I finally finished End of Days. It took me two years to finish this series, but I also wasn’t in a rush to read it. But I’m glad to finally have it done and finished.

#readthemargine TBR:

  • When the Stars Go Blue by Caridad Barbara Ferrer
  • The Young Elites by Marie Lu
  • I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai
  • ARC – The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

I won’t be reading just these books this month. I have some ARCs I need to read, but my #readthemargin TBR takes precedent over the other books I need to read.

Again, shout out to Aentee and her upcoming read-a-thon, Dumbledore’s Army Readathon. It begins Jan 1 – Jan 15 and focuses on diverse (especially #ownvoices) books. Be sure to check it out!

Are you taking part in #readthemargin or other reading challenges this month? Will you be planning to take part in the Dumbledore’s Army Readathon? What are your reading goals for the month?

Don’t forget, you can keep up with my updates on Goodreads and Twitter!

  1. I am self-selecting out of readathons this month and next as I’m on s bit of burn out. But I can’t wait to hear how everyone’s readathons go! I just finished Inside Out and Back Again, myself. It was so cute– I have a huge weakness for epistolary novels. While this isn’t *exactly* an epistolary, it read like that for me. I haven’t read any of the rest, but they are on my TBR now! What is your favorite?

    • epistolary is a new word for me! I had to look it up. But you’re right, it doesn’t follow the format, but it does read as if Hà is writing to someone.

I finished Under a Painted Sky the night before the post went up, but it’s definitely my favorite so far. I totally thought the book was written in verse (I don’t know why) so when I picked it up from the library I was in for a total surprise, but I went through it so quickly.

      • I always find when authors choose to write in verse interesting. I have been reflecting on this, and I wonder if this is due to how Out of the Dust is written. It is a similar style but distinctly are journal entries. It’s always interesting how past experience shapes our interpretation of the world.
