In my October Month In Review post, I shared that I would be participating in NaNoWriMo this year. This will be my fifth year participating. I complain about this annual writing challenge, but I have fun doing it all the same.
A quick rundown: NaNoWriMo (or National Novel Writing Month) is a month long writing endeavor to write a 50,000(+) word novel in thirty days. Crazy, I know, but some of us writers are a little crazy.
I don’t usually talk about my writing and writing projects because they usually don’t go anywhere. I write a first or discovery draft and then I push it off to the side and fail to do anything with them because ah scary.
But today, I thought I’d share just a few things with you for the sake of being more candid with my writing life. So here it goes.
What kind of novel are you working on? I’m writing a high-fantasy novel about a young woman who finds herself in a new place and new home after agreeing to a marriage alliance that will end a generation-long conflict.
What inspired me/How did I come up with my idea? During last year’s NaNo, I kept hitting roadblocks during worldbuilding and I figured out that I didn’t know much about the setting and cultures of the world I was creating and writing in. So, I began to dig a little more and a new character sprang up and a whole new situation. I decided to shelve NaNo 2015’s novel and moved on to work on this one.
I also realized, last weekend during some last minute NaNo prep and outlining, that my novel kind of follows the Beauty and the Beast story. For outlining purposes, I went along with that story structure, but I don’t know if that’ll remain true after rounds of editing (if I ever get to that point!).
Meet the Cast of Characters:
Valeria Delune // The main character and protagonist. She’s 24 years old and runs her family’s estate and works in the city as one of city leader’s assistants. She’s the eldest of four girls and frequently has to wrangle up the other three. Seeming to be on the verge of attaining a higher position within the city’s leadership, she’s given a proposition that may be too costly to deny.
Matias Harlan [last name tentative] // Main character. One of the Lords from Falconoor and the only son of the person currently in power. His reputation defines him, mainly as a proficient and deadly warrior, cold, and most importantly stubborn.
Goals and what do I want to accomplish with this novel? Actually finish it this month! Last year I reached 50k, but I didn’t actually finish the story. I also want to try to make this novel dark. I don’t know if I’ll be able too, but it’s something I want to try.
Here are some sort of mantras that are inspiring me (and Valeria):
And here are some novel aesthetics I made:
If you’re interested you can add me as a buddy here. I know it’s not too much info about my novel here, but I’m working out more details as I write.
That’s it for now. Thanks for sticking around to read. What did you think? Are you taking part in NaNoWriMo or are you planning/currently working on your own writing project? Best of luck on all your writing endeavors!
