Title: Walk On Earth A Stranger
Author: Rae Carson
Pub: Sep 2015
Genre: Historical Fiction, Fantasy
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5) – Really liked it
After shocking events at home, Lee Westfall embarks on a journey westward, hoping to save herself from a dreadful uncle and make it big gold-mining with her best friend.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first installment of Rae Carson’s Gold Seer trilogy. It is filled with history, the setting comes out, and the characters are interesting and flesh-out enough to keep me interested.
In hindsight, this book could be considered a little lackluster, and I think that has much to do with that fact that it’s the first book in a trilogy. So, Carson is probably setting the stage for a larger story and character arc.
I liked reading this because it takes place in a time of American history that isn’t referenced much anymore. The movement west and the new territories. In school we talk about the harrowing conditions many families experienced when they moved west, but we hardly ever get a contemporary rendition of that dangerous journey. That’s why I’m so glad Carson decided to write about this subject.
I think I would have liked Carson to place some more emphasis or interactions between the characters.
Plus, the cover is absolutely gorgeous! The cover for the sequel is beautiful too. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!
